Commentary: Beautiful conditions made for a great days racing on Dookie’s major plains circuit with the race starting from Dookie College for the first time. The combined 10, 12,15 and 18 minute bunch was caught by the 7 minute bunch on the downhill run back into the college with the 5 minute bunch reeling the leaders back just before the college entrance. The scratch markers which featured Sean Finning Commowealth Games gold medalist had a massive task ahead of them to make up five minutes on the next group. In a great show of his abilities former Olympian Steve Fairless broke free of his scratch co-markers to bridge the gap to the leading group by the final run into the college and featured in the bunch sprint up the Dookie College main drive. Cobram’s Travis Lindhe was too strong on the difficult uphill finish and took the win ahead of a large pack.
Special Thanks: Thank you to Garrie Carman for commissairing the event, Greater Shepparton City Council and GAME contracting for providing the traffic management and also to all the volunteer corner marshals.

Shepp & Wang CC Combine

Juniors:

A small group of juniors contested the junior handicap race at Dookie on Saturday.
With a diverse difference in ages the limit pair of Abby Gray from Wangaratta & Liam Edwards from Shepparton started 12 minutes in front of the scratch markers – Thomas McDonald & Seamus Lane from Wangaratta & Tahn Dempster from Cobram, with the middle markers starting at 7 minutes – Nicci Clark & Fergus Samon from Wangaratta. At the turn into Dookie-Nalinga Road, Abby had formed a small break & took the corner fast & was fortunate to keep her bike upright. She forged ahead & at the turn into the Devenish Road was well ahead with the middle markers not making up much time. The scratch markers had only made up a few minutes. Abby took a well earned win with Fergus taking out the sprint for second from Nicci with Liam a few minutes behind. Tahn won the sprint for fastest time from Thomas with Seamus a few minutes behind.

Commentary: A larger than expected field of 41 riders lined up for this special race which was organised as a joint effort between the Shepparton and Wangaratta Cycling Clubs. The race was conducted on the very challenging “Major Plains” circuit in Dookie with excellent conditions for racing. A very strong scratch bunch featuring former Olympian Stephen Fairless and Ashley Baines who has just returned from racing in Europe caught the 4 minute bunch early in the race. The combined scratch and four minute bunch passed the six minute bunch going past the cemetery just 3 kilometers from the finish and then managed to round up the remains of the 10 minute bunch coming into Dookie. It was a day for the limit riders with racing newcomer Peter McClelland from Shepparton winning the bunch sprint for first place in narrowly beating Wangaratta’s Chris Howard. Stephen Fairless easily beating his younger scratch co-markers for fastest time after getting half a wheel in front of the in-form Mitchell Zito in a sprint finish.

Special Thanks: Thank you to Anne Woodley from Wangaratta Cycling Club for commissairing the event and also to all the volunteer corner marshals.

Commentary:
16 riders took to the start line in perfect conditions on the tough major plains circuit. Scratch caught the 5 minute bunch just after the cemetery corner on the final lap. The combined scratch & 5 minute group joined the 10 minute bunch on the bends as they turned to make the trip back towards Dookie. The 13 strong group could not manage to catch the three limit markers who finished 1 minute ahead of the chasing group. It came down to a 3 man sprint to decide the order of placing with young Luke Moore fresh from his victory in the final round of the Ivan Collings series the week before managing to out sprint his two older competitors. Mark Ryan narrowly beat John Kremor to pick up 2nd. It was a close sprint for fastest time honors with former Olympian Steve Fairless narrowly beating Chris Allemand with a lunge to the line.
Special Thanks: Thanks to Tony Moore, Murray & Jenny Yuille & Mrs Zito for volunteering to marshal a corner.
